DBT Advanced Skills

Course Overview

Instructor: Dr. Mark Carlson

This course is designed to help mental health professionals broaden their therapeutic skills in dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) to treat clients with different clinical issues. Dr. Carlson introduces a training course that addresses the needs of both new and experienced DBT therapists. Moreover, Dr. Carlson includes techniques, exercises, and handouts that can be implemented directly in a clinical environment.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  • Summarize the basic principles of the DBT advanced training.
  • Identify the TAG framework for DBT clinical work.
  • Describe the main content areas of the DBT advanced training program.
  • Identify the challenges clients face with DBT treatment adherence.
  • Describe how to complete a skills implementation plan with different clinical issues.
  • Select the appropriate DBT handouts and assessment tools according to each client and the therapy stage they are at.

Dr. Carlson is the author of CBT for Chronic Pain and Psychological Well-Being and Psychological Well-Being in Cancer

He has served as Vice-President of the Dialectical Behavior Therapy National Certification and Accreditation Association.

Cognitive-Behavioral Strategies for Treatment of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder

Course Overview

Instructor: Dr. Stefanie LoSavio

This course is designed to help mental health clinicians learn and apply cognitive-behavioral strategies for patients with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Dr. LoSavio introduces CBT principles applied to trauma and PTSD, including how to conceptualize cases with PTSD, identify and prioritize treatment targets, and skillfully deliver cognitive and behavioral interventions.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  • Conceptualize your clients with PTSD from a cognitive-behavioral framework.
  • Provide psychoeducation to clients about PTSD and trauma recovery.
  • Identify and prioritize key beliefs that keep clients stuck in PTSD.
  • Practice implementing strategies to help clients evaluate their problematic trauma-related beliefs.
  • Develop plans to address behaviors that are interfering with trauma recovery.

Stefanie LoSavio, Ph.D.

Dr. LoSavio is a licensed psychologist, board-certified by the American Board of Professional Psychology in the Behavioral and Cognitive specialty. Dr. LoSavio is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, where she engages in clinical research and training focused on the treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder and comorbid conditions.

DBT for Trauma and PTSD

Course Overview

This course is designed for mental health professionals to broaden their dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) tools to treat clients with posttraumatic problems in living, complex trauma, and PTSD. Throughout the course, Dr. Reutter describes the DBT framework applied to trauma, explains concepts and exercises as applied to posttraumatic problems and PTSD, and guides mental health professionals on their clinical application.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  • Differentiate classic PTSD from complex trauma.
  • List the main dialectical dilemmas experienced by a person with trauma issues.
  • Identify the key concepts of dialectical behavioral therapy as applied to PTSD and trauma issues.
  • Describe the treatment phases of trauma-focused DBT.
  • Recognize the differences of the DBT approach to trauma compared to other existing treatments.
  • Recognize the DBT skillsets that can be used with clients for trauma treatment.

Dr. Kirby Reutter is a bilingual clinical psychologist who contracts with the US Department of Homeland Security to provide treatment services for asylum seekers.

Dr. Reutter is a TED speaker and the author of The Dialectical Behavior Therapy Skills Workbook for PTSD: Practical Exercises for Overcoming Trauma and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.
